OUR PROJECT IN NICARAGUA

200.000 TREES ARE GROWING. NEXT GOAL: PLANT 100.000 TREES EVERY YEAR

We are continuously expanding and setting new goals to leave a positive green footprint for generations to come.

WHY NICARAGUA?

GROWTH

Tropical forests suffer a lot from climate change. Yet, trees grow faster in the tropics and are able to store carbon more efficiently as a result

PRICE

The cost of planting trees is much lower compared to Europe. Labour, land, seeds and materials are significantly cheaper

NORTH SOUTH

North-South collaboration is crucial for achieving global goals and aims to achieve an ecological and social-economic benefit

HISTORY

Due to some of the founders’ history with Nicaragua, good relationships and cooperation with motivated people have already been established

LOCATION

OUR TREE PLANTING SITE

The territory in Nicaragua we are reforesting, is a largely deforested area of about 170 hectares in a region where cattle ranching is the main reason for deforestation.

Since we started our operations, 200000 trees are already growing.

WHAT WE DO

Treegen.11

We plant a wide variety of indigenous trees

We started our nursery in 2021. A large diversity of young native trees have been planted in deforested areas. Non-native invasive trees have been replaced. Trees bearing fruits add value to the daily diet of the people. Living fences have been established. We have also allowed plantlets to sprout spontaneously.

We protect forests and ecosystems

The area has a small existing forest (about 5 hectares) that is vital for the village’s groundwater supply. Protecting and expanding the forest ensures that the village’s water supply is safeguarded, and this during the increasingly prolonged periods of extreme drought as well.

We create habitats for wildlife

Massive deforestation in the region has destroyed wildlife habitats. Animals have re-established themselves in the new forest. Small populations of monkeys and many bird species living in the existing forest are multiplying and expanding. A sloth has again been spotted in the newly created forest.

To plant more trees while increasing productivity and raising the standard of living in an ecologically sustainable way, we apply 4 types of agroforestry systems.

Nesbitt

Agroforestry in three layers

We plant a wide variety of native trees and shrubs using the three layers system. We include non-valuable and high-value timber species and species whose fruits, berries and herbs are very nutritional. Agroforestry increases biodiversity, soil fertility and reduces soil erosion.

Silvopastoral system

Trees play a role in farm productivity and provide shade and fodder to cattle. We use the silvopastoral system combining trees with grassland. The trees we plant belong to species whose foliage can be eaten by cattle. These half-shaded pastures have a high nutritional value.

Orchard around the patios

Most of the common tree species provide fruits or are important timber or firewood species. We plan and monitor to ensure that a wide variety of trees is planted. Part of the trees we plant, can be retained for these uses so that planting trees also turns into a profitable activity.

Living fences

Living fences are economy-friendly. Only an initial investment in seeds and saplings is required. They are sustainable, a lifelong investment in the planet as they last as long as the lives of other planted trees. They are natural windbreaks. They act as barriers to reduce and deflect wind.

OUR STAFF

Currently, we employ two permanent staff members, seasonal day labourers and people who occasionally work in shifts.
Melkin Fletes Orozco is our local project manager. He lives in the nearby village. He plans and organises all the work, buying seeds, establishing nurseries, planting saplings, following up on plantings. He recruits day labourers. He regularly reports on work-related issues: progress, obstacles and problems. There are frequent consultations via WhatsApp and ZoomIT.
A house has been built in the most accessible zone, where Justo Chavarria Calero lives with his family. He is the guardian and, together with the day labourers, carries out all works.

WE BELIEVE IN TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION TO BUILD A GREEN FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME!

COLLABORATION

Good cooperation with local people and organisations is crucial for the long-term success of a project

ENCOURAGING

Tree Planting

We want to plant a lot of trees and encourage people in the region to plant trees too. Good understanding and cooperation are crucial. There is a lot of poverty in the region. By expanding the project, we can get more local people working and provide income to more families. We give saplings for free to those who cannot afford to nurse trees.

Trainings

A collaboration with the local branch of INAFOR , Instituto Nacional Forestal, has come about. We share the same objective, encourage people in the region to plant trees. It was suggested to make our project a model project. At the nursery and during plantings, we show how and which trees can be planted. The benefits of planting trees is explained as well.

Experiences

Involving the youngest generations in the tree planting process is essential to us. Together with INAFOR we provide education on tree planting to schoolchildren and youths. They learn all about seeding, care and planting, the types of native trees and the benefits of trees.  At TreeGenerations they turn their theoretical knowledge into practical experience.

NEAR FUTURE, next GOAL: plant 100.000 trees a year

Much has already been achieved in a short period of time. The next step is to expand and plant more trees in the region. Approximately 70 % of smallholder family farmers live in poverty in Nicaragua. Faced with climate change people are typically aware of the importance of trees and willing to plant, but do not have the means to buy seeds and take care of saplings during the period leading to their final plantation.

To solve this problem and to plant more trees in the region, we worked out a plan in cooperation with INAFOR. TreeGenerations grows 50,000 trees of various indigenous species twice a year at its nursery.  INAFOR distributes the saplings and monitors the plantings. To plant 100,000 trees a year, we need partners who can provide the necessary resources to achieve our goal.

A greener world is a healthier world. Every donation - no matter how small - makes a difference. Let's plant trees together!
